When searching for suggestions on effective skincare in your 30’s I found many articles that gave a long list of products that would benefit your skin as it changes. The nerd in me likes more information, so I continued to search. With my background in skincare and treatments, I already have a pretty good idea of the physiological changes happening in the skin as we age. I’m always curious to see what’s out there for the consumer like you and me and if it’s good information we’re finding. And the verdict is, there is a lot of good advice. The trick is to understand what is happening before you jump into the solution right away by trying a slew of products that many different websites present to you, thanks to bots that track our searches. You will have many products shown to you, and then you have to figure out which is best. How do you decide? Price? Convenience? Popularity? Recommendation from a friend? Is your skin oily, dry or dehydrated? Where to start.
The first thing to understand is that when we reach our 30’s chronological ageing is causing more changes in the connective tissue. Fine lines start to appear around the eyes and mouth. Subtle changes in elasticity occur. The changes may be subtle or more pronounced in someone who smokes, consumes alcohol or is overexposed to the sun. Some areas of pigmentation can start to appear.
Depending on your circumstances, you may be a busy professional working long hours or a mother of small children to occupy your days. Either way, there may not be a lot of time left for yourself. As a result, you might be skipping your skincare routine because you are too busy or tired. Or you are looking for a simple, uncomplicated routine that is quick and easy yet will still give you results.
Back to what is happening in the skin. Now is the time you want to be taking preventative measures to slow the signs of ageing. We can do this by selecting products with key ingredients to start targeting those premature signs of ageing.
Lotion (Toner)
Adding this step is beneficial if you aren’t already using one. Many contain moisture and soothing properties that will hydrate and calm the skin. It also creates optimal conditions for your serum and moisturizer to absorb.
Serum
The serum is an essential step, in my opinion, and that of many skincare specialists. Serums are made with high concentrations of active ingredients to treat and repair the skin. They are usually a liquid and are formulated to absorb quickly and deeply into the epidermis. Apply them twice a day. Look for serums with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid or retinol to target fine lines, dehydration and pigmentation.
Eye Cream
If you haven’t used one up to now, this is the time to start. Fine lines may be beginning to form around the eyes and lips. These two areas are usually the first to show signs of ageing. Apply it twice daily, and don’t forget to use it around your lips to increase hydration and slow expression lines.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is the most cost-effective product in your regimen and the best defence against premature ageing. There are so many options available today, from creams to powders. Find the one you like to use and use it daily, all year round, to protect and prevent pigmentation even if it’s cloudy and in the winter! Don’t forget the tops of your hands too.
