Self-tanning guide… from streaky to glowing
Want to extend your fabulous holiday glow? Or perhaps you’re jetting off for some late summer sun and want to feel good lounging poolside from day one.
Lory shares her professional tips for getting that bronzed beach-babe streak-free look at home.
Ready… Jet Set… Glow
The secret to a streak-free, long-lasting glow is…preparation.
Exfoliation is key
Always exfoliate 24 hours before applying the tanning product. This removes dead skin cells which means a more even glow and no darker patches. Use an exfoliation mitt [or add product] for a silky, smooth finish.
Likewise, remove any body hair 24 hours in advance to avoid your tanning product ‘sinking’ into any tiny cuts or your pores and creating a blotchy finish.
And keep your skin well-hydrated for an even application. Apply a good moisturizer daily in the week before you self-tan, preferably one that’s fragrance-free and oil-free, to avoid any reactions with your tanning product.
Master the self-tan application
- Never use perfume or deodorant before applying self-tanning products or use while they are developing. These both create a film on the skin which can prevent the tanning product from working and cause a patchy result. Even a hint of perfume or deodorant will affect your tan so don’t be tempted.
- Apply your self-tan in sections to avoid missing any spots or over-applying. “I really recommend using a tanning mitt for even distribution. Plus you won’t end up with tanned palms.
- Always blend well at the wrists and ankles. And remember less is more – you can always apply another layer if needed.
- Wear something loose and floaty after your tan and avoid tight clothes like skinny jeans, underwired bras or anything that rubs onto the skin.
- And don’t get your skin wet or sweaty until your tan has completely developed.
Wondering which product is best for you? I love Tantasia from Jane Iredale self-tanner for its natural-looking results and easy application.
Maintain your glow
Keep your skin moisturized daily to extend the life of your tan and ensure an even fade. Remember to always apply sunscreen. Yes, your self-tan will give you that sun-kissed look, but it won’t protect you from harmful UV rays.
Add that extra glow to your face with Jane Iredale bronzers and Glow Time blushes.
